Kate Maier, Womb Raider
Ken and I enjoy movies. Going to a weekend showing has become our biggest source of entertainment, especially now that we're in the dead of summer and pregnancy and the Florida heat just don't mix. We try to get to a movie at least once a week. Last one we saw was Lara Croft Tomb Raider on Ken's birthday last Friday.
As Kate develops more and more each week, we've started to notice a strange celluloid phenomenon. She has decided that those two hours of weekend flick watching have become her hours of heightened activity. From Charlie's Angels 2 and Legally Blonde 2, to T3 and 2 Fast 2 Furious, there's no summer movie that has stopped her in her tracks yet. Kate kicks, pokes and turns the entire time.
We still can't decide what makes her little limbs move. Does she hate the movie? Is she giving it two baby toes up? Is she emulating Lara Croft stunts in her fetal playground? Is she banging on her apartment walls to tell us to turn that gosh darn noise down? Fearing that it may be the latter, I've actually wrapped a sweater around my belly to try to muffle the sound. Although I sat there sweating, it appeared to have no influence on her liveliness whatsoever.
I tried to do some research on the Internet to see if other women had experienced this same occurrence. I only found one article written by Pop Music Critic Evelyn McDonnell at The Miami Herald: Music Gives Mom-To-Be Real Kicks.
Like me, she experienced the same fetal movement. Only her child got kicky at music concerts. No matter what the music, from Belafonte to Veloso, her little one shook, rattled and rolled. She did get the impression though that her baby disliked the Shakira concert as much as she did. My guess is that if I dragged my little womb raider to Dumb and Dumberer she might be giving me that same "get me the heck out of here" vibe. Don't worry Kate. I promise that dad and I will never get that desperate for entertainment.
