Clifford Live!

Yesterday Ken and I took Kate to see Clifford The Big Red Dog Live! I don’t have much to report about the show. It was good but not great, although Kate seemed to enjoy it.

I only have 2 comments. First, Ken and I purchased what we thought were pretty good seats – close to the stage off to the side. Boy, were we wrong. They were awful seats. The sound was awful, so bad that it sounded like the performers couldn’t sing a note that was pleasant to our ears. We also missed so much of the action because we could not see most of the stage. Anything behind the curtain line was pretty much out of our sight, which often included the actors. It made the show hard to follow. During intermission we decided to try seats much further in the back but in the center of the audience. My goodness what a difference it made. The sound was great. The show was so much more entertaining. We had a completely different opinion of the show from Act 1 to Act 2.

Second, parts and actors were missing from the show. It was very bizarre. We were following along in the program we had gotten for Kate and there were whole musical numbers and character cut out. At first Ken and I thought that maybe we didn’t see some things from our lousy first act seats; but after double checking the program we realized things were definitely cut out of the performance. The cast pictures included Mr. and Mrs. Bleakman. They were not in the show at all. It also showed pictures of T-Bone and Cleo dancing in the air during a performance of “Down To Earth” during Act 2. The dancing never happened and the song never happened. Weird, huh?

I guess the show is just fine for preschoolers who may not be able to read or follow a story very well, as long as they have good seats. But this show certainly left Ken and I perplexed. Although it was pretty inexpensive for a live show at less than $20 per seat, we probably wouldn’t recommend it. We might have had a different opinion if we had the even cheaper (but better) seats from the beginning.
