12 Month Doctor Visit

Last Friday Kate had her 12 month well-baby pediatrician visit. As you can see from the pictures she still loves looking at the pictures on the walls of the exam rooms. She's now at the stage where she can point at what interests her. Like with the bath letters, Kate likes to say the names of what she's pointing at out loud. Of course every name is still in baby language, like "ah." So Ken and I will tell her the real name too.

Speaking of language, Kate hasn't really had any first words yet. She'll say "mammamamamama" without any real acknowledgment of its meaning. I say she hasn't "really" had any first words yet because I swear every once in awhile she'll say "eye" when she's waving "hi" or "bye." As a matter of fact, yesterday I was telling this to my grandmother and at the mention of "eye" Kate started waving her hand. So I think she may be making the connection between her "eye" and hi or bye.

At this last visit, Kate not only had her scheduled Hib vaccine, but she also received a booster of Prevnar, the pneumococcal vaccine. Apparently there was a shortage of this vaccine, and it was not given to her at her 6 month visit. But the shortage is now over and she received her third dose.

Kate weighed in at 18 lbs. 10 oz. and 29 3/4 inches, which is in the 10th and 66th percentile respectively. She's still on the low end of the range for weight but within range which works for us. The only concern we brought up with the doctor was that Kate wasn't taking to whole milk as quickly as we had thought or hoped. So as I continue to nurse her, I am also trying to give a little bit of milk to her everyday. Perhaps after she acquires a taste for it she'll be ready to guzzle down the recommended 2 to 3 cups daily.

Riding Around In Her Automobile

Mom and dad bought Kate a brand new, red, convertible sports car for her birthday. And she loves it! These are a few shots we took during her first cruise around the neighborhood. Her hair is a little messy, but what do you expect from a convertible?

Our driveway is on a bit of an incline, so I push Kate in her car to the top of the incline and run to the bottom to catch her at the sidewalk. She doesn't go very fast, but to her it's quite a thrill. In most cases she kept at least one hand on the wheel. As you can see in the last picture, though, her excitement got the best of her.

Kate's First Birthday Party

We've added the first batch of pictures from Kate's birthday party to the album, but there will be more to come. We'll make another post as soon as the new ones are added.

Before you wonder too long about all of the different hats on some of the guests' heads first you should read the invitation:

Our little Kate
Is turning one.
We're having a Hat Party.
It'll be so much fun.

Dress for lunch
In semi-casual attire.
But don't forget your hat
For all to admire.

Not sure which to wear?
Then follow greats,
From The Cat in the Hat's stripes,
To Carmen Miranda's grapes.

Join us at One
At Wolfgang Puck Grand Cafe.
We can't wait to see you
In your bowler, fez or Parisian beret.

Kate had a great time although she appeared to be very serious, even in these pictures. She was taking in the whole scene -- the guests, the hats, the cake, everything.

For the kids that attended we put a foam puzzle mat and toys on the floor in the center of the room. Not only did it give the kids a special play area, but it also allowed the guests to enjoy Kate and her friends having fun.

For the adult guests we had Ray Russotto, a caricature artist and cartoonist, sketch portraits of them. He was great! And everyone really seemed to like him as well as his artistic ability. You can see the portrait he did of my dad in the mix of pictures. We'll be sure to add the ones of me and Ken and Kate with the next batch of pictures.

The guests also played "mental" games for prizes. There was a Baby Match Up, where you had to match the baby with show or movie, a Baby Word Scramble and a multiple choice Kate Quiz. The third question nearly stumped everyone. Lastly, we asked guests to write a caption for a cute little picture of Kate. The winning caption was,"Look at all these funny hats!" The highlight of the party for me was watching Kate have her first taste of sugary birthday cake. Luckily she didn't make too much of a mess. She cried (the only time she cried during the whole party) when we tried to put her in her chair. She was much more interested in socializing then sitting in her chair. So instead she sat on daddy's lap and I held the cake while everyone sang. She made an icky face with her first taste but she still continued to dip her little fingers in. Once her interest was in the cake we were able to put her in her chair. She also really liked the little Elmo on her mini cake. At one point she even leaned over to give him a kiss.

First Birthday Dinner

Tonight Grandma and Grandpa Maier met us for Kate's first birthday dinner. We went to Lester's Diner in Sunrise because on Thursdays they serve peas. And Kate loves peas. She also loves Lester's because she's treated like a local VIP. All of the wait staff stops by our table when we're there just to say hi to Kate.

Since today was a special day they stuck a candle in a piece of cake and sang Happy Birthday. Kate loved the attention and was entertained by the performance. She was also very interested in the lit candle atop the piece of cake. Ken had to stop her from touching while I took her picture. She didn't get a taste of the cake but she did get a few bites of Grandma's cookie. Yum. Yum. It's good to be One. :-)

Happy 1st Birthday Kate!

It was a year ago today that you entered our lives -- and what a wonderful year it has been! Every day has been an exciting new adventure. We can't wait to see what year two will bring.

We love you very much!
Mom and Dad
